Not just “An American Band” but now an “American Legend,” Grand Funk Railroad’s drummer, vocalist, writer, and only constant band member, Don Brewer, is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of his band with a celebration tour!
A Michigan transplant now living in Jupiter with his wife Sunny Quinn, Don no longer sports his signature afro, but not much else about him has changed. Since re-forming his group in 1996, Brewer has been in a constant state of tour activity which has kept interest in Grand Funk strong.
Since he hated the clarinet in Junior High School, Don volunteered to carry the brass drum in the school’s marching band and the rest is history. Best remembered across generations for his classic vocal performance on “We’re An American Band,” Brewer insists he is always a drummer first and a vocalist second. Famous collaborations include 70’s superstar Todd Rundgren who produced several of Grand Funk’s hits, and extensively toured with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. Grand Funk Railroad went on to record 13 Gold and 10 Platinum albums. In fact, David Fricke, of Rolling Stone Magazine, said: “You cannot talk about rock in the 1970s without talking about Grand Funk Railroad!”
Over the years, Don has appeared on numerous TV and radio shows including David Letterman, Jay Leno, and Good Morning America promoting the band. Today, Don’s Grand Funk Railroad fellow band members include Bruce Kulick, Mel Schacher, Max Carl, and Tim Cashion (see photo). Grand Funk’s legacy still reigns over the Classic Rock landscape fifty years after its 1969 birth in Flint, Michigan – this proves their staying power, and guarantees that future appearances and band tours will continue to reach both new and long-time fans.
